Beginner learning combinations at a first kickboxing class at Fight Fitness Markham

What to Expect at Your First Kickboxing Class (A Markham Beginner's Guide)

June 27, 2026

Your first kickboxing class is coached, scaled to your level, and a lot less scary than you think. You will warm up, learn a few basic strikes, hit pads and bags at your own pace, and finish with core work. You will not spar. You will not get hit. You will not be expected to keep up with anyone. A good coach builds the class around beginners, because most people in the room started exactly where you are. Here is what actually happens, what to wear, and how to walk in ready.

What a first class actually looks like

A typical class runs about 45 minutes and follows a simple arc:

  • Warm-up. Light movement to get your body ready. Nothing you cannot handle.
  • The basics. A coach teaches a few core strikes: jab, cross, hook, front kick, roundhouse. You practice slowly, in the air or on pads, with form corrected gently.
  • Bag and pad work. You throw combinations on a heavy bag or with a partner holding pads. You set the pace. You rest when you need to.
  • Core and conditioning. A short finisher to round out the workout.

At Fight Fitness in Markham, classes are coach-led and modifications are always available. If a move does not work for your body that day, your coach gives you another one. You are never stuck doing something that hurts.

No, you will not have to spar or get hit

This is the number one fear, so let us kill it now. Fitness kickboxing is not fighting. You hit bags and pads, not people. Nobody hits you. You are not expected to spar in your first class, or your first month, or at all if you do not want to. The goal is a workout and a skill, not a bruise.

What to wear

Keep it simple. You want to move and sweat without anything getting in the way.

  • Clothing. Moisture-wicking athletic gear. Leggings or shorts that let you kick freely. Skip jeans or anything tight through the thigh that restricts a kick or a squat.
  • Top. A breathable shirt or tank. You will warm up fast.
  • Shoes. Supportive cross-training shoes, or barefoot, depending on the gym. Check before you come. Skip running shoes with a thick heel, since they make pivoting harder.

What to bring

Less than you would guess:

  • Water and a towel. A one-hour cardio kickboxing class burns roughly 350 to 450 calories (American Council on Exercise), so you will sweat.
  • Hand wraps. Wraps protect your wrists and knuckles. You do not need to buy a pair to start. Fight Fitness gives new members free hand wraps, so you are covered on day one.

Do you need to be fit before you start?

No. This is the second-biggest myth, and it stops too many people from walking in.

Coaches expect beginners. The intensity is scaled to you, not to the fittest person in the room. You go at your pace, you take breaks, and you build from there. One of our members put it best after starting as a total beginner. She said she was an absolute beginner, completed the 6-Week Challenge, the coaches were fantastic, and everyone knew her by name. That is the room you are walking into, not a competition.

How you will feel after

Honest answer: a little sore, in places you did not expect. Hips, core, and shoulders are common the day after your first class. That is normal, it fades within a few days, and it gets easier fast as your body adapts. Most people leave the first class tired and grinning, not wrecked.

How to book your first class

The hardest rep is the one that gets you through the door. After that, the coaches take over.

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear to my first kickboxing class?

Moisture-wicking athletic clothing that lets you move. Leggings or shorts, a breathable top, and supportive cross-training shoes (or barefoot, depending on the gym). Avoid jeans or anything tight through the thighs that restricts kicks.

Do I need my own gloves and wraps?

Not to start. Many gyms provide gear for your first sessions. Fight Fitness gives new members free hand wraps, so you can show up with nothing but water and a towel and still be ready.

Do I need to be fit before I start kickboxing?

No. Classes are scaled to your level and coaches expect beginners. You set your own pace, take breaks when you need them, and build up over time. Most people in the room started as beginners too.

Will I have to spar or get hit?

No. Fitness kickboxing means hitting bags and pads, not people. You will not spar in your first class, and you are never hit. It is a workout and a skill, not a fight.

Should I eat before kickboxing?

A light snack an hour or two before helps, especially something with carbs and a little protein. Avoid a heavy meal right before class. Bring water and sip throughout.

How hard is the first kickboxing class?

Challenging but doable. Your heart rate climbs and you may feel out of breath sooner than expected, but the coach adjusts the intensity to you. You rest when you need to. The goal of the first class is learning the basics, not maxing out.
