Mackenzie Malainey, Fight Fitness's Fighter of the Month, training in a kickboxing bag class in Markham, Ontario

🏆 FIGHTER OF THE MONTH 🏆 Mackenzie Malainey

August 05, 20263 min read

Every month, we spotlight one #FIGHTFAM member who embodies what this gym is really about:

🤝 Follows through with commitments 🚫 Integrity to make no excuses to quit 🌱 Does not let bad habits surpass their desire to grow ✋ Consistent and honest 😇 Trusts the process

This month, that person is Mackenzie Malainey — and honestly, it wasn't even close.

Meet Mac

Name: Mackenzie Malainey

Occupation: Software Engineer

Time in the #FIGHTFAM: Less than a year

Mac's story is one of those reminders that you don't need years in the gym to become a true FF icon — you just need to show up, do the work, and keep showing up.

Life Before Fight Fitness

Before joining, Mac describes life as "overall okay" — some light exercise here and there, the occasional hike, long days walking around downtown. But underneath the surface, the weight was creeping up and some health concerns were starting to nag at the back of his mind. Sound familiar? It's exactly where a lot of our members start.

The Results

Since training with us, Mac has:

  • 📉 Lost over 10 pounds and 5% body fat

  • ⚡ Increased energy levels across the board

  • 🍽️ Built real confidence in meal planning and nutrition — not just following a plan, but understanding why it works

His Favorite Class

Ask Mac what he loves most and he'll tell you: Kickboxing/Bag Class. It's where everything he learns in Fight Fundamentals comes together — a chance to take the technique, apply it at his own pace, and let it click.

Advice for Anyone Starting Out

"All the coaches are there to support you, just take it at your own pace, but also get invested and remain consistent, it's worth the effort!"

His Mantra

"Do what you can, with what you have, where you are." — Theodore Roosevelt

Fitting, considering how far "where he was" has already taken him.

What the Coaches Are Saying

Mac wasn't just a name on a nomination list this month — he had the whole gym talking.

Kiana pointed to his complete commitment to training, splitting his time between semi-privates and group classes, and the transformation that's come with it. She also noted his consistently positive energy and his presence at community events.

Kyle echoed the sentiment, calling out Mac's work ethic, positivity, and eagerness to learn — showing up to every Fight Fundamentals session and applying what he's taught directly in regular classes, often doubling up between FIIT and FF. Kyle later added that he watched Mac push through the monthly combine three times in a row and still have enough left in the tank to put up 34 reps in a follow-up session. He also mentioned Mac has his sights set on a Hyrox this year, and that Mac's reliability extends to communication — always giving a heads-up when he can't make a class.

Rachelle backed it up too, pointing to Mac's incredible transformation and his consistency across both semi-private and group training.

Head Coach Mark Lawrence had a tough call this month between Mac and fellow nominee Dina, ultimately noting that this would be Mac's first time taking the title.

Congratulations, Mac! 🎉

From a "just okay" starting point to a 10+ pound transformation, a nutrition mindset shift, and a genuine reputation across the coaching staff as one of the hardest workers in the gym — Mac is exactly who we mean when we say trust the process.

Next time you're in for Kickboxing/Bag Class, give him a high five. And if you're just starting your own journey — remember what he told us:

"Just take it at your own pace, but also get invested and remain consistent. It's worth the effort."
